Is Jungfraujoch Worth It? My Honest Review After Visiting the Top of Europe
When you’re planning a trip to Switzerland, there’s one attraction that comes up over and over again.
Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe.
It’s one of the country’s most famous experiences, sitting at 3,454 metres (11,332 ft) above sea level and home to Europe’s highest railway station.
It’s also one of the most expensive.
Between the train ticket and the time it takes to visit, it’s understandable why so many people ask the same question:
Is Jungfraujoch actually worth it?
After visiting, my answer is yes—but with a few caveats.
If it’s your first trip to Switzerland and you’ve never experienced a high-mountain excursion like this before, I think Jungfraujoch is absolutely worth doing once.
We’ve now visited three of Europe’s most famous alpine excursions—Jungfraujoch, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, and Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix—and each offers something completely different.
What makes Jungfraujoch special isn’t just the views. It’s the entire experience. From riding Europe’s highest railway through tunnels carved into the mountain, to walking through the Ice Palace and stepping out onto the Aletsch Glacier, it feels much more immersive than simply visiting another viewpoint.
Is it expensive? Absolutely.
Would I make it a priority on every trip to Switzerland? Probably not.
But if it’s your first visit, I genuinely think it’s one of those iconic experiences that’s worth seeing for yourself.
The key is knowing what you’re paying for and planning your visit well. In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything we learned—from how to get there and what we thought was worth seeing, to what we’d skip next time and how I’d plan the day if I were doing it again.

What is Jungfraujoch?
Jungfraujoch is the highest railway station in Europe and one of Switzerland’s most iconic attractions.
Located between the mountains of Jungfrau and Mönch, visitors travel by train through tunnels carved directly into the mountain before emerging onto the Aletsch Glacier—Europe’s largest glacier.
Once at the summit, there are several attractions included with your ticket, making it much more than simply a viewpoint.
How to Get There
We travelled entirely by train using the SBB Mobile App and our Swiss Half Fare Cards.
Our route looked like this:
Grindelwald —> Kleine Scheidegg —> Jungfraujoch
The final section between Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch is one of the highlights of the journey. The railway climbs directly into the mountain before emerging at the highest railway station in Europe.
Even getting there feels like part of the experience.
What We Did at Jungfraujoch
Sphinx Observatory
One of the first things we did after arriving was head to the Sphinx Observatory.
The panoramic views over the Aletsch Glacier are incredible, and on a clear day you can see for miles across the surrounding Alps.
If the weather is good, this is where you’ll probably spend the most time.
Ice Palace
Walking through tunnels carved into the glacier was such a unique experience.
The ice sculptures are impressive, and although it’s busy, I definitely wouldn’t skip it.
Just be prepared—the floors are slippery.
Snow Fun Park
This ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the day.
Neither of us expected to enjoy the tubing as much as we did. In fact, I had to convince Rebecca to give it a try, and we both ended up laughing the entire way down.
It’s a fun reminder that not every mountain experience has to be serious.
What We Skipped
One nice thing about Jungfraujoch is that you don’t have to do absolutely everything.
We skipped the Lindt Chocolate Heaven because we’d rather spend our time outside enjoying the glacier views.
Depending on your interests, you could easily tailor the visit to focus more on photography, history or family activities.
Tips for Visiting
✔ Go on a clear day.
This is probably the biggest tip I can give.
The views are the main attraction, and clouds can completely change the experience.
✔ Book an early train.
You’ll avoid some of the crowds and have more flexibility if the weather changes throughout the day.
✔ Dress warmly.
Even in July it was cold outside.
✔ Wear sunglasses.
The glacier reflects a surprising amount of sunlight.
✔ Give yourself half a day.
There’s more to see than you might expect.
Jungfraujoch vs Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
This is one of the questions I get asked most often. Having visited both, here’s my take.
Jungfraujoch
✔ Better overall experience
✔ More attractions included
✔ Historic railway
✔ Ice Palace
✔ Snow Fun Park
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
✔ Better Matterhorn views
✔ Slightly quieter
✔ Easier to combine with hiking
If I could only choose one on my first visit to Switzerland, I’d probably choose Jungfraujoch.
But if you’ve already been once, I’d head to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise on your next trip.
What to Pack for Jungfraujoch
Even if you’re visiting Jungfraujoch in the middle of summer, don’t underestimate the weather at 3,454 metres (11,332 ft). Temperatures are significantly cooler than the valley below, and you’ll likely encounter snow and ice year-round.
For our visit, I was glad I packed:
A lightweight insulated or fleece layer
A waterproof jacket
Hiking shoes or sturdy runners with good grip
Sunglasses (the glare off the glacier is intense)
Sunscreen and SPF lip balm
A camera with a fully charged battery
If you’re combining Jungfraujoch with hiking elsewhere in the Bernese Oberland, you’ll likely already have everything you need.
