Is the Lagoa DoubleTree by Hilton in São Miguel Worth the Splurge?
Let’s be real—when you’re planning a trip to the Azores, there’s a good chance you’re dreaming about lush greenery, volcanic craters, and soaking in geothermal hot springs… not necessarily staying at a Hilton. But when I saw the photos and amenities listed for the Lagoa DoubleTree by Hilton Açores – São Miguel, I thought: Okay, maybe a little luxury wouldn’t hurt.
This is billed as a 5-star hotel, and yes—the plaque on the door proudly declares it. From the moment you step through the revolving door, you’re greeted by that polished, upscale charm. The lobby is clean and modern with high-end finishes, moody lighting, and attentive staff offering you a warm cookie (classic Hilton move). It feels elevated by Portuguese island standards, but as someone who has stayed at her fair share of luxe spots in North America, I’d personally rate it a solid 4-star experience. Here’s why.
The Highlights: What the Hotel Does Well
Let’s start with what the Lagoa DoubleTree does do right—because it’s quite a lot.
Elegant Interiors and Immaculate Cleanliness
The hotel is beautiful. Sleek design, thoughtful finishes, and spotlessly clean. Everything from the hallways to the pool loungers felt well-maintained.
Delicious On-Site Dining
There are two restaurants on site—and both impressed. Breakfasts were expansive and fresh, with local cheeses, baked goods, and strong Azorean coffee. Dinners felt elevated without being overly fussy.
Well-Appointed Wellness Amenities
The wellness centre includes a gym, rooftop pool, sauna, Turkish bath, and indoor spa pool—perfect for decompressing after a day of hiking around Sete Cidades or exploring Furnas. Honestly, this part made the splurge feel somewhat justified. The views from the rooftop are stunning.
So, Why Didn’t It Win Me Over Completely?
The Location
Here’s where it lost some points. The hotel is located in Lagoa, which is about a 15-minute drive from the Ponta Delgada airport and 10–20 minutes from many of the island’s best sights. On one hand, it’s quieter than staying right in Ponta Delgada. On the other… it felt a bit isolated.
There’s not much around: no walkable restaurants, shops, or even scenic trails directly accessible from the hotel. If you’re hoping to step outside and explore, you’ll be driving pretty much everywhere.
The Missing “Je Ne Sais Quoi”
Everything was good—but it lacked that something special. That local charm. That character. That moment where you look around and think, “Wow, this is unlike anywhere I’ve stayed before.” You know that feeling? I just didn’t get it here.
Driving Directions from the Airport
If you’re planning to rent a car (which I highly recommend in São Miguel), it’s a fairly straightforward drive from João Paulo II Airport (PDL) to the hotel.
Here’s the simplest route:
Exit the airport and follow signs for R1-1A / EN1-1A heading east.
Continue on EN1-1A for about 15 minutes, exiting at Lagoa.
Follow signs to Rua do Dr. José Bruno Tavares Carreiro, where you’ll find the hotel tucked just a few minutes inland.
The drive is easy, scenic in parts, and there’s ample parking at the hotel.
Final Verdict: Would I Stay Here Again?
Was it a beautiful hotel? Absolutely.
Did I enjoy my stay? Yes.
Would I stay here again? Probably not.
There are so many boutique and eco-forward hotels in São Miguel that offer a more immersive, memorable experience. This hotel felt polished and safe—great for someone who wants reliability and brand recognition—but a bit too cookie-cutter for my taste.
Where I’m Eyeing Next
If you’re looking for a stay that really leans into the unique character of the Azores, here are a few places I’m considering for next time:
An off-the-grid, luxury-meets-nature retreat in the heart of Furnas. Think minimalist cabins, forest surroundings, a plunge pool and sauna. Dreamy.
This one is tucked into the jungle-like forest around Furnas and offers tranquil, design-forward accommodations with major glamping vibes.
Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort
A beachfront boutique resort on the north coast with surf-y vibes, eco-conscious design, and access to Santa Bárbara Beach. Possibly the best of both worlds—comfort and character.
TL;DR
If you want a safe, sleek, reliable stay with all the hotel amenities—Lagoa DoubleTree by Hilton will tick your boxes. But if you’re chasing charm, connection, and that something extra, the Azores have plenty more to offer. And I plan to find them.
