If I had to pick one word for Perley Rock Trail, it would be dramatic. From waterfalls and wildflowers to lingering snowfields and panoramic glacier views, this trail brings the goods at every turn. But—like most hikes in Glacier National Park—you’re going to earn it.
I hiked this trail back in 2020, during the quiet of the pandemic summer. It was early August and still surprisingly quiet on the trail, which added to the magic. While the world felt unpredictable, this trail felt grounding in all the best ways.
But make no mistake—Perley Rock is tough. It’s steep, exposed, and absolutely breathtaking (both literally and figuratively). By the time I scrambled the final pitch to the ridge, I was wiped, but the views? Worth every burning quad.

Perley Rock Trail Overview
Distance: ~11 km (out & back)
Elevation Gain: ~1,150 m
Time: 4.5–7 hours
Trailhead: Illecillewaet Campground
Difficulty: Hard
Best Time to Go: Late July through early September (once snow has melted)
This trail begins from the same area as Glacier Crest and Abbott Ridge—near the historic Illecillewaet Campground. After winding through a lush forest section, it quickly kicks into high gear with switchbacks, rocky terrain, and long stretches of exposed alpine.
The final 1–2 km often holds snow well into the summer, so check trail conditions before you go. I hiked it in early August and there was still a large snowfield across the final stretch just below the ridge., we managed with spikes and poles but it was technical. The last push to Perley Rock itself includes a short but scrambly section—nothing to challanging, but definitely steep and loose in places.

Trail Notes + Conditions
Seasonal Bridge: Each year, Parks Canada installs a seasonal bridge across Asulkan Brook just beyond the trailhead. It’s typically in place from early July to late September. If it’s not up yet, be prepared for a tricky (and possibly dangerous) creek crossing.
Exposure: There is minimal shade on this trail after the first 2 km, so come prepared with sun protection, plenty of water, and a good hat. This trail will have you hiking right under the Illecillewaet Glacier—breathtaking, but also very exposed.
Fatigue Factor: By the time I reached the top, I was totally wiped. I consider myself a strong hiker, but the consistent climb and sun exposure definitely added up. If you’re looking for something mellow—this ain’t it. But if you’re looking for big, bold, and beautiful—this trail delivers in spades.

Gear
I’ve put together a Day Hiking Checklist with a complete list of gear recommendations.
How to Get There
• From Vancouver: 6.5–7.5 hours via Trans-Canada Hwy (Highway 1)
• From Calgary: 3.5–4 hours via Trans-Canada Hwy
The drive through Rogers Pass is stunning. Just be prepared for cell service to drop after Revelstoke. The Illecillewaet parking lot is well-marked and located right off Highway 1 inside the park.
Park Pass Info
Since Glacier is part of the national parks system, a Parks Canada Discovery Pass is required. You can buy a day pass at the trailhead or online in advance—or go with the annual pass if you plan to visit more than 7 days a year (we definitely get our money’s worth).

Where to Stay
There are some great options depending on your travel style:
Camping:
Illecillewaet Campground (closest to the trailhead!)
Loop Brook Campground (another Parks Canada option nearby)
Hotels + Lodges:
Basecamp Resorts Golden – modern suites with kitchens
Cathedral Mountain Lodge in Yoho – rustic luxury surrounded by wilderness
Glacier Mountaineer Lodge at Kicking Horse for a cozy base with views
Perley Rock is the kind of hike that sticks with you. It’s wild, raw, and challenging—exactly the kind of trail I love. While it’s not as well-known as some of the Rockies’ heavy hitters, it easily holds its own, especially if you’re after glacier views without the crowds.
If you’re planning a trip to Glacier National Park and you’re up for a good climb, this one absolutely belongs on your list. Just make sure you check those trail conditions, bring your A-game (and snacks), and get ready to be blown away.
