Gear Review: YY Nation Yimbus Cactus Women’s Vegan Cactus Leather Sneakers
Most of the footwear featured on the Peak Experiences Blog is designed for hiking trails, technical terrain or long days outside. Lifestyle shoes aren’t something I purchase or review very often. If I’m investing in footwear, I typically want to know how it performs in the mountains.
Then ROI Recreation Outfitters sent me a pair of YY Nation Yimbus Cactus Women’s Sneakers when they began carrying the New Zealand brand in Canada.
I’ve now been wearing them regularly for six months and, despite being well outside my usual footwear category, they have become one of the most-worn pairs of shoes in my closet. They’re comfortable, easy to clean and surprisingly versatile—but what initially caught my attention was the thoughtful collection of materials used to make them.
Who Is YY Nation?
YY Nation is a footwear company founded in Wellington, New Zealand, with the goal of creating more environmentally responsible sneakers using natural, recycled and bio-based materials.
The idea began in 2018 when founder Jeremy Bank noticed pieces of microplastic mixed into the sand while visiting a beach in Maui with his daughter. It was a beach he remembered being pristine during an earlier visit, and the experience prompted him to start questioning why footwear relied so heavily on conventional plastics and petroleum-based materials.
Even the company’s name reflects that focus. YY, or waewae in te reo Māori, means foot or footprint—a fitting name for a brand that thinks carefully about the footprint its products leave behind.
Rather than relying primarily on conventional materials, YY Nation incorporates options such as New Zealand merino wool, bamboo, recycled plastic, pineapple-leaf fibres, algae, sugarcane and cactus leather across its footwear collections.
The brand also measures the carbon footprint of its shoes and works with independent organizations to assess and offset the remaining emissions through indigenous forest restoration. YY Nation reports that its sneakers produce between 42% and 61% fewer carbon emissions than a conventional sneaker, depending on the model.
I appreciate that YY Nation doesn’t present sustainability as a finished achievement. The company openly describes it as an ongoing process, with each new design providing an opportunity to improve materials, manufacturing and end-of-life options.
What Makes the Yimbus Cactus Sneakers Different?
The Yimbus is YY Nation’s classic court-style sneaker. It has the familiar shape and versatility of an everyday leather sneaker, but the upper is made with cactus leather instead of animal leather.
Cactus leather is a soft, durable, plant-based alternative designed to reduce the amount of petroleum-based material used in the shoe. YY Nation’s cactus leather is made without PVC, phthalates or toxic chemicals and is partially biodegradable.
The rest of the shoe incorporates several other thoughtfully selected materials:
A TENCEL™ wood-pulp lining designed to help keep feet cool and dry
A bio-based sole made with materials such as algae or sugarcane
Rubber inserts for added grip and durability
Laces made from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles
FSC-certified cardboard packaging
YY Nation reports an average footprint of 4.89 kg of CO₂e per pair of Yimbus sneakers, compared with approximately 14 kg for a conventional pair.
Sustainability claims can sometimes feel like a long list of buzzwords, but YY Nation’s approach feels more tangible. Each part of the shoe has been considered, from the upper and sole to the laces and packaging.
Of course, thoughtful materials only matter if the finished product is something you genuinely want to wear—and this is where the Yimbus really impressed me.
Comfort for Everyday Wear
The first thing I noticed was how comfortable these shoes felt.
Lifestyle sneakers can look great while offering very little support, especially once you spend more than a few hours standing or walking in them. After six months of regular wear, the Yimbus have continued to keep my feet feeling comfortable throughout the day.
They feel lightweight without feeling flimsy, and there is enough cushioning underfoot that I don’t find myself thinking about my feet by the end of the day—which might be the best compliment I can give an everyday shoe.
I’ve worn them for errands, casual outings, travel days and all the general running around that comes with family life. They’ve been easy to reach for whenever I want something more polished than a technical shoe but still need to be comfortable and active.
These aren’t meant to replace a hiking or running shoe, but that isn’t their job. They fill the gap between technical footwear and a purely fashion-focused sneaker extremely well.
Easy to Keep Clean
I have the white Yimbus with taupe accents, so I expected them to require quite a bit of upkeep—especially since I am not exactly gentle with my footwear.
Thankfully, the cactus leather upper is very easy to wipe clean.
After six months, I’ve been impressed by how well the shoes have maintained their appearance. Most everyday dirt and marks come off quickly with a damp cloth, making them much easier to care for than many fabric sneakers.
That low-maintenance finish makes a big difference for me. I want shoes that look good, but I don’t want footwear that needs to be treated like a museum piece every time I leave the house.
Stylish and Surprisingly Versatile
The Yimbus has a clean, classic design that works with almost anything.
The court-inspired silhouette looks polished without being overly dressy, while the contrasting colour accents add enough personality to keep them from feeling like another basic white sneaker. Each pair also comes with two lace options, allowing you to switch between a bolder, wider lace and a more traditional flat athletic lace.
I’ve found them easy to wear with jeans, leggings, casual dresses and travel outfits. They feel appropriate for grabbing coffee, walking around town or spending a day sightseeing without drifting too far into athletic-shoe territory.
For someone who usually prioritizes function over fashion, it’s nice to have a pair that genuinely delivers both.
How Have They Held Up After Six Months?
After six months of regular wear, the Yimbus have held up very well.
The upper still looks good, the structure of the shoe has remained supportive and the sole continues to feel comfortable. They haven’t become one of those pairs that looked great for the first few weeks and then slowly migrated to the back of the closet.
Instead, I keep reaching for them.
That durability is an important part of the sustainability conversation. Innovative materials are valuable, but one of the most practical ways to reduce the environmental impact of our clothing and footwear is to purchase products we can use repeatedly and keep for longer.
So far, the Yimbus have proven that their alternative materials don’t require a compromise in comfort, appearance or everyday durability.

I didn’t expect a lifestyle sneaker to become one of my favourite pieces of gear this year—but the YY Nation Yimbus won me over.
After six months of wear, they have proven to be comfortable, durable, easy to clean and genuinely stylish. I can wear them throughout a busy day without ending up with tired or uncomfortable feet, and they work with enough of my wardrobe that they never feel like a difficult choice.
I also appreciate YY Nation’s willingness to rethink what a sneaker can be made from. The combination of cactus leather, recycled laces, a wood-pulp lining and bio-based sole materials makes the Yimbus notably different from the average court sneaker.
